1. Purpose
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ (CDPW™) is an identification and provenance layer designed to preserve information about the origin, framework association, human contribution, AI involvement, and documentary lineage of digital cultural outputs.
The watermark is not intended to establish copyright ownership merely through its presence.
Its primary function is to answer a different set of questions:
What is this? Where did it originate? What framework or archive is associated with it? Was artificial intelligence involved? What human contribution should remain visible? Where can its provenance record be verified?
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ therefore functions as a persistent identity and provenance signal within the broader Cultural DNA framework ecosystem.
2. Core Principle
Technology may assist creation. Human contribution should remain visible.
The watermark is designed around transparency rather than restriction.
AI-generated, human-created, and hybrid human/AI works may coexist within the same digital environment.
The objective is not to stigmatize any method of creation.
The objective is to preserve an accurate record of how an output came into existence and where its provenance information can be verified.

Creator / Contributor: Identified human creator, contributor, producer, archivist, or responsible entity

AI System: AI technology involved, where applicable and known
Human Contribution: Description or classification of meaningful human participation
Source / Origin: Original production, archive, recording, publication, or digital source

Persistent Identifier: DOI, URI, archival identifier, or other durable reference
Verification Location: Public or authorized location where the provenance record can be examined
Integrity Reference: Cryptographic hash, content credential, watermark signature, or comparable technical integrity mechanism where implemented

6. Visible Watermark
When a visible identifier is appropriate, the following compact form may accompany a document, image, audio release, video, dataset, or other digital object:

The visible mark should point toward the provenance record rather than imply copyright ownership by itself.
7. Machine-Readable Layer
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ is designed conceptually to support multiple technical carriers.
These may include:
Embedded audio watermarking — inaudible signals associated with generated or processed audio.
Content Credentials / C2PA — cryptographically signed provenance assertions associated with compatible digital media.
Structured metadata — JSON-LD, XMP, ID3, BWF, embedded media metadata, or comparable machine-readable records.
Cryptographic fingerprints — hashes or content identifiers connecting an object to a provenance record.
Persistent identifiers — DOI, URI, archival accession number, or another durable reference.
Visible identification — human-readable marks allowing people to recognize that a corresponding provenance record exists.
No single carrier is required to perform every function.
The architecture is intentionally layered so that provenance information can survive across different technologies and distribution environments.
8. Relationship to Audio Watermarking
An audio watermark can answer:
“Can this audio be identified as originating from a particular technological system?”
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ extends the question:
“What is the documented provenance of this output?”
Accordingly:

Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™
→ identifies and connects origin, human contribution, AI participation, metadata, verification, and persistent documentation
The two approaches can therefore be complementary.
9. Relationship to C2PA
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ is not presented as a replacement for C2PA or other technical provenance standards.
Where technically appropriate, CDPW™ records may be designed to interoperate conceptually with Content Credentials, cryptographic signatures, embedded metadata, and other provenance technologies.
The Cultural DNA framework provides the classification and documentation architecture, while technical standards may provide mechanisms for signing, embedding, transmitting, or validating those assertions.
10. Human Contribution Layer
A central requirement of the Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ is preservation of meaningful human contribution.
An AI identifier alone may establish that artificial intelligence participated in producing an output.
It does not necessarily explain what the human did.
The provenance record should therefore preserve relevant human functions such as:
Concept · Prompt Direction · Composition · Performance · Production · Editing · Selection · Arrangement · Curation · Metadata · Documentation · Archival Stewardship · Final Editorial Control
This creates a more informative record than a binary classification of:
AI / Not AI
Instead, provenance becomes a documented relationship between human contribution, technological assistance, and the resulting cultural object.
11. Non-Ownership Principle
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ is an identification and documentation mechanism.
Its presence should not, by itself, be interpreted as:
proof of copyright ownership;
proof of legal authorship;
proof that underlying training material was lawfully obtained;
proof of licensing;
or proof that every statement contained within an associated provenance record has been independently verified.
Those matters require their own supporting evidence and applicable legal analysis.
12. Guiding Statement
A watermark should do more than identify the machine. A provenance system should preserve the story of how the work came to exist.
The Cultural DNA Provenance Watermark™ is therefore designed around a simple progression:
